what are prayers?

this might seem like a silly question to some, but i think it's important to define. prayers are a means of connection with the Divine, and normally take the form of pre-written spoken words, but they can also be songs, off-the-cuff monologues, chants, and just about anything else. prayer can be spoken, whispered, sung, thought, acted, lived. it's common among reconstructionist and devotional polytheists to read historically attested prayers to the Gods, and writing modern prayers inspired by ancient forms is something many of us love to do.
